John Ringling built the Ca d'Zan on the Sarasota bayfront and the mansion and John Ringling's art collection, housed in the Ringling museum are now owned by the State of Florida and serve as a major art and tour destination. The primary focus of Cook Library's Ringling collection is on Charles Ringling and his descendents. Charles Ringling purchased bayfront property directly north of John Ringling's property and built two homes, one for himself and his wife, and later a second home for his daughter, Hester. This property was purchased for New College. Charles Ringling's home is now College Hall and is used for special functions, faculty offices and classrooms. Hester Ringling's home is now Cook Hall, and contains the campus administration offices. A Brief Family History August and Marie Ringling had seven sons: Alf, Al, Otto, Henry, Charles, A.G., John, and one daughter, Ida. All seven sons were to one degree or another involved in the creation and management of the Ringling Circus. Charles Ringling married Edith Conway, and had two children, Hester and Robert. Hester married three times, first to Clifton Parks. They had one son who went by the name of Charles Ringling Lancaster. He in turn, married Alice and had one daughter named Joanna. Alice went on to write a biography of her mother-in-law, Hester. Hester's second husband was Louis Lancaster with whom she had a second son, Stuart. Hester is currently best known by the last name of her last husband, Charles Sanford. Hester built a home just to the south of her parent's home, now known as Cook Hall. Charles Ringling's son Robert had one son, Charles Ringling. The Ringling Collection contains photos, film and documents pertaining to the two Charles Ringling homes on the Sarasota bayfront, the family's daily life while in Sarasota and the Ringling Circus.
