ELECTRONIC RESOURCES POLICY

A variety of electronic information resources are available at Cook Library. New College and USF students, faculty and staff presenting a current ID will have first priority use of public access computers to access the electronic resources. Some database licensing agreements may limit use by non-affiliated patrons.

DISCLAIMER: Cook Library is NOT responsible for any damage that may occur to patron software or hardware. While PC’s are regularly checked for viruses, we cannot guarantee virus-free conditions at all times.

RESTRICTIONS:

1. There is a 60-minute time limit per patron when all computers are in use. If no one is waiting to use a computer, the patron may continue to use the system for an additional hour or until another patron requests access. New College and USF patrons with a current ID may “bump” a non-affiliated patron at any time.

2.  Without exception, patrons are not permitted to install software, either personal or library-owned.

3. For security reasons, formatting personal disks at the library workstations is prohibited.

4. Under NO circumstances may the personal computers be used by patrons for purposes other than electronic retrieval of appropriate material. The downloading of software is prohibited.

5.Access of any pornographic material on library computers is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

6. The patron will be responsible for any damage to the equipment incurred due to misuse.

REQUIREMENTS:

Electronic searching requires some knowledge of a PC keyboard, Boolean commands, a PC mouse, and the ability to read and follow menu-driven instructions. Ideally the patron should prepare a search strategy BEFORE accessing the database.

INSTRUCTION:

Instruction is available in the mechanics of developing a search strategy or in using a PC, the Internet, or CD-ROM software. Reference staff offer orientation sessions, classroom bibliographic instruction, introduction to the electronic resources, and one-on-one instructional consultations. Please consult with a Reference librarian to determine what approach will best suit your needs.

PRINTING/DOWNLOADING

Printers using 8½ x 11 paper are available for use at the PC workstations. The printers may only be operated with a cash-to-card vend card or ID card. The cost for printing is $.11 per page/side. Vend cards may be purchased for $1.00 in the library. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk.

Patrons are encouraged to download information to their own formatted disks or flash drives.
